NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Charlotte women’s tennis team will be seeded fifth out of the 16-team field at the Atlantic 10 Championships this week, as announced Tuesday by the league office. The 49ers are pitted against No. 12 seed Rhode Island in the opening round at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Charlotte concluded the regular season with a 10-6 record, reaching double-digit victories for the eighth time in head coach Michaela Gorman’s 10 seasons. The Niners faced only one conference foe during the regular season, knocking off Dayton 7-0 March 28 on their home courts at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.

Four 49ers earned double-figure singles wins, led by 15 from seniors Anna Ekelund and Iveta Guneva. Sophomores Natsuko Takayanagi (12) and Lisa Grosselius (10) joined the pair to give Charlotte a well-balanced lineup. The Niners boast .500 or better records at five of the six singles positions and own an overall 57-36 (.613) mark in dual matches.

Charlotte also has put together solid results in doubles with two of the three slots owning winning ledgers, including an impressive 12-3 record at No. 1. Ekelund and Grosselius have played the majority of the contests at the top position, while freshman Jessica Pérez and senior Alexandra Zinn have held down a solid effort to help the 49ers win the doubles point in 10 of the 16 matches.

Rhode Island carries a 6-13 mark into the tournament, dropping a 7-0 decision at Saint Joseph’s Sunday in its regular-season finale. The Rams faced five Atlantic 10 foes during the campaign, posting a 1-4 mark with the lone triumph coming Saturday at La Salle.

The tournament is a single-elimination format with the first team to four points declared the winner. Any matches still in progress when a team will not finish and those players will be pulled from the courts.

The Atlantic 10 Championships returns to The Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va., for the third-straight season.
