Charlotte sophomore second baseman Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) and junior starting pitcher Brock Hudgens (Jamestown, N.C. / Southwest Guilford HS) were named the Atlantic 10 Conference’s Player and Pitcher of the Week, respective by the league office today. It is the first honor for both student-athletes and the first time Charlotte has taken two of the three weekly baseball awards this season.

The 49ers won three of four games last week, including a weekend sweep of A-10 opponent George Washington at home. The 49ers are 22-13, including a 6-3 A-10 mark.

Elwood led Charlotte offensively for the week with multiple hits in all four games last week. His two-RBI triple Friday gave Charlotte a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning of the 4-3 win to start the series. He had an RBI-double in Charlotte’s seven-run fourth inning to blow open the 10-4 win Saturday. Sunday, he had the first RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly in the first inning as Charlotte took a 2-1 series finale. Elwood is second on the team with a .358 batting average, tied for third-most runs scored with 24 and fourth with 24 RBI this season and tied for third with four stolen bases. His three home runs are tied for the team lead and his seven doubles are tied for second on the team. He is just one of two 49ers with the A-10 cycle, with a triple Friday night and a double Saturday afternoon to go with a home run at Richmond to record all four types of hits in league play. He did not strikeout in 12 at bats for the weekend and has struck out just once in 36 A-10 at bats. As of today’s NCAA stats posting, Elwood is ranked third in the nation and tops in the A-10 in the “toughest to strike out” category, with just five strikeouts in 135 at bats for a rating of 27.0, the average number of at bats between strikeouts this season.

Hudgens tossed a career-long 7.1 innings of shutout baseball to push Charlotte to a Sunday home victory and a weekend series sweep of George Washington. Hudgens scattered three hits and walked one in the outing to improve to 3-0, and his first conference win of the season. Hudgens is second on the team with 42 strikeouts, with a 3.27 earned run average, lowest of the four starting pitchers on the roster.

Charlotte has had four student-athletes named to a weekly conference award in baseball. Senior Shane Basen won Co-Player of the Week on February 25, freshman Sean Geoghegan was tabbed Rookie of the Week on March 11, with junior Justin Seager winning Player of the Week on March 18 and redshirt freshman Brett Lang earning Rookie of the Week on March 25.

Charlotte hosts No. 15 North Carolina State on Tuesday to complete an eight-game home stand before playing the next nine of 10 on the road, starting with a Wednesday road contest at Winthrop. Both midweek games start at 6 p.m.
