CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte softball fell to Massachusetts 12-0 and 4-2 in an Atlantic 10 doubleheader Sunday afternoon at D.L. Phillips Complex.
The Niners fell to 16-22 and 4-8 in the Atlantic 10. Massachusetts (12-17, 8-2) recorded double-digit hits in both games of Sunday’s doubleheader.
In the closing game, Charlotte sliced Massachusetts’ lead to 4-2 in the first inning. Natalie Capone led-off with a single to centerfield and moved to second off Alex Rogers’ bunt single. Briana Gwaltney reached on a Massachusetts error to load the bases. A wild pitch on the next play allowed Charlotte to score its first run. Chelsea Ingersoll drove in the next run with a hit to left field.
Both teams remained scoreless after the first inning. Gwaltney led the 49ers with two hits including a stand-up double to centerfield in the seventh inning. Charlotte left nine runners on base in game two.
Chelsea Lisikatos (6-8) recorded a pair of strikeouts.
In game one, Massachusetts grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning. The Minutewomen led off the inning with the game’s first hit which was followed by a home run from Katie Bettencourt.
It was the fourth inning where Massachusetts scored six runs on just four hits and a pair of Charlotte errors to take the 8-0 advantage. The Minutewomen kept dominating on offense and extended their lead to 12-0 in the fifth inning.
Katie Watkins (9-13) finished with a game-high four strikeouts despite being relieved in the fifth inning by Lang.
Charlotte will host Radford on Wednesday, April 17 for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
