Following his outstanding final-round performance Sunday, junior Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga. / LSU) was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Co-Golfer of the Week, officials announced today.
Castro was one stroke off of the school record with a final-round 65 on Sunday, tied for the fourth-best round in the tournament’s history to finish in second place by one stroke at the 54-hole Irish Creek Collegiate over the weekend. Castro’s round powered the 49ers from ninth into a tie for third as the only team of the 17 in the field under par on Sunday. Castro started his final round with a birdie and bogeyed his fourth hole of the day before recording birdies in six of his final 12 holes to get his score to seven-under after a one-over and two-under first two rounds.
He was just one of six golfers to go under par in Sunday’s final round. The second is his best career finish and second Top-Five finish of the season, though in the largest field he played in this year. He has turned in five sub-70 rounds this season, including tying the school record earlier this season with a 64 in Stockton, Calif. last October.
Castro shares the honor with Branden Chicorka of Rhode Island. Castro is the league’s third two-time winner of the Golfer of the Week award, having captured the honor on November 7. It is the sixth time this season that a Charlotte golfer captured either Golfer or Rookie of the Week from the A-10. In addition to Franco’s two honors, freshmen Thomas Rowland (March 27), Dan Hendry (September 19) and senior Braeden Cryderman (October 17) were previously named Golfer of the week, while freshman Riley Davenport (February 27) was named Rookie of the Week earlier this season.
The 49ers are heading to Iowa City, Iowa this weekend for the final regular-season tournament of the season, the Hawkeye Invitational at the Finkbine Golf Course starting Saturday. The 12-team field will play 36 holes on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Central Time, with 18 more holes at 9 Central on Sunday.
