Charlotte junior Justin Seager (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus HS) finished 4-for-4 including his conference-leading 13th double of the season and senior third baseman Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) hit his first home run of the year, but the 49ers ran out of magic after scoring two in the ninth in a 6-5 road loss at Presbyterian Tuesday at the PC Baseball Complex. Charlotte was missing its regular second baseman and center fielder and managed to out hit the Blue Hose 11-6 in the game, but three unearned runs in the eighth by PC doomed the Niners to their eighth loss of the season. Charlotte is 16-8, while PC is now 16-10 on the season.

The 49ers scored a run in the first inning for the first time in seven games after leadoff singles from redshirt senior shortstop Justin Roland (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) and redshirt senior outfielder Tony Montalbano (New Orleans, La. / Bossier Parish JC) before Basen sacrificed them over with a bunt. Roland scored from third on a sacrifice fly from Seager to give Charlotte the lead.

Charlotte starter Jason Harris (Austin, Tex. / Barton County CC)  retired the first six batters of the game before he hit the leadoff hitter of the third. A sacrifice bunt and groundout moved the runner to third with two outs before a walk and an RBI bunt single from Brandon Martin tied the game and an RBI single up the middle from catcher Brad Zebedis put the Blue Hose on top.

Charlotte retook the lead after getting the bases loaded with no one out in the fifth. Seager drove in one run with an RBI single through the left side and redshirt freshman first baseman Brett Lang (Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell HS) drove in another with an RBI groundout for the 3-2 Charlotte lead.

PC tied the game after an error, stolen base and a an RBI single through the right side from Martin.

The tied held until the eighth, when two errors and three hits led to the three unearned runs in the frame. The last two RBI came on a two-RBI double from third baseman Jay Lizanich, his only hit of the game.

Basen hit a two-out solo homer to left, followed by Seager’s double and an RBI single from Lang before the last out was recorded on a foul out.

Freshman reliever Micah Wells (Pfafftown, N.C. / Mt. Tabor HS) took the loss (0-2), despite not giving up an earned run in the game. He gave up just one hit in 1.1 innings, with one strikeout and one walk.

PC reliever Michael Ricchi got the win in relief (2-0). Recchi tossed the last 4.2 innings, giving up four hits and two runs, recording four strikeouts.

The 49ers return home this weekend in a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series against VCU. Friday night’s 6 p.m. game is sunglasses night, with sunglasses going to fans entering the gate, while supplies last.

Two players on each team recorded a pair of RBI, with Seager’s four hits leading all players. Charlotte’s Roland and Presbyterian’s Aaron Preston, both the leadoff hitters, tied for the game high with two runs scored each.
