|Niners Strike Out 10, but Fall 6-1 to Va. Tech|
Charlotte pitching tied the season high with 10 strikeouts, but Virginia Tech's three-run first inning proved too much as the Hokies won 6-1 at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium Tuesday night in non-conference baseball action. The loss drops Charlotte to 10-5 on the season. VT is now 13-4. The Hokies dropped out of the Top 25 this week, but are still receiving votes.
The Hokies got a pair of home runs in the first to score three runs. First baseman Sean Keselica hit a solo shot to right center and after a walk and a popout, catcher Mark Zagunis hit a two-run homer to left for the three-run lead.
Virginia Tech scored two unearned runs in the second after two singles, a walk and a sacrifice fly for a 5-0 lead.
VT added another unearned run in the fifth after a pair of walks, a passed ball and a wild pitch scored the sixth run of the game.
The Niners were able to score an unearned run in the eighth. Senior Michael Green (Richmond, Va. / Thomas Dale HS) doubled down the left field line with one out. He scored on a throwing error trying to turn a double play.
Tech starter Tanner McIntyre got the win (2-0). He did not allow a run in six innings, with two hits and three walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Charlotte starter Jason Harris (Austin, Tex. / Barton County CC) took the loss for the 49ers (0-1). He allowed five runs, three earned, in two innings on four hits and three walks. He struck out three.
Charlotte reliever Brock Hudgens (Jamestown, N.C. / Southwest Guilford HS) tied his season high with five strikeouts in the contest. He pitches three innings, charged with an unearned run on a hit and two walks.
The 49ers host a four-game series with Siena, beginning Friday at 4 p.m. Saturday will feature a noon doubleheader, followed by a noon Sunday finale.
NOTES: Sophomore second baseman Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) had one of Charlotte's four hits, a double in the fourth... Elwood has a hit in all 15 games for Charlotte this season and extended his career-long hit streak to 16 games, dating back to last season... Freshman Jared Mathis (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) made his first career appearance... He allowed a hit and a walk in the ninth inning on 19 pitches... The crowd was the third-straight sellout and fourth sellout at Charlotte this season for a home game...
