Charlotte golf got off to a good start, landing third out of 15 teams with a one-over 289 in the opening round of the Bayou City Collegiate Championship at the Redstone Golf Club in Humble, Tex. Friday.

Only 15 golfers posted sub-par rounds, with Charlotte junior Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga. / LSU) one of six golfers with a three-under 69 for a tie for third overall in the three-round tournament.

"We had a solid start to the tournament," said Charlotte head coach Ryan Cabbage. "This golf course is not easy and we did some nice things today. The guys hit a lot of quality shots in our opening round. I am really proud of Franco with the round he had to get it started."

Senior Braeden Cryderman (Huntsville, Ontario / Queens University of Charlotte) scored par on all 18 holes today for an even-par 72, putting him in a tie for 16th heading to round two tomorrow. Two of Charlotte's remaining three golfers turned in a two-over 74 to complete the team score for round one.

"I thought Braeden had a solid round for us today and that our younger guys also played well to put us in a good spot," added coach Cabbage. "I look forward to us getting out there tomorrow and expect we will keep hitting good shots like we did today."

Charlotte trails team leader and No. 3 Texas by four strokes and Baylor by three strokes after the first round.

Texas golfer Brax McCarthy, competing as an individual, leads the field with a five-under 67.

Charlotte will tee off with Texas and Baylor at 11:30 a.m. local time from the first tee tomorrow.
