|49ers to play Sacred Heart on Thursday|
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After suspending two days of the Charlotte Classic due to the snow storm last weekend, the 49ers' softball team added a game against Sacred Heart, scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 21 at 4 p.m. at the D.L. Phillips Softball Complex.
Thursday’s contest will be a single game and will help kickoff the 49ers Invitational on Friday, Feb. 22. Competing in the three-day tournament is Sacred Heart, Western Carolina, and Robert Morris. Friday and Saturday will feature four games throughout the day as Sacred Heart and Robert Morris are scheduled to open the tournament on Friday at 10 a.m.
Charlotte will play the next two games and take on Sacred Heart at 12 p.m. and Western Carolina at 2 p.m. on Friday. Western Carolina and Robert Morris will face off in the final game at 4 p.m.
Saturday’s schedule will feature Sacred Heart and WCU at 10 a.m. and Charlotte and Robert Morris at 12 p.m. A pair of playoff games will take place at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to prepare for Sunday’s consolation and championship games at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The Niners (4-2 overall) are led by freshman Jessica Plemmons who is batting .563. She has appeared in five games for the 49ers and hit a pair of triples during the Charlotte Classic. Chelsea Stamey (.467), Natalie Capone (.435), Samantha Slade (.435), Briana Gwaltney (.429), Chelsea Lisikatos (.375), Chelsea Ingersoll (.353), and Kalie Lang (.318) have all turned in steady offensive performances during the early 2013 campaign. As a team the Niners are batting .369 and holding their opponents to a .326 average.
Katie Watkins, Lang, and Lisikatos have all recorded a win in the circle as Lang leads the charge with two. Lang leads the team in strikeouts (10) and has appeared in four games.
Sacred Heart will be opening its 2013 season when it faces Charlotte on Thursday, Feb. 21.
The Pioneers went 21-32 last season and 6-14 in the Northeast Conference (NEC). Robert Morris, who was picked to with the NEC title after taking the crown in 2012, started the 2013 season by going 2-2 at the Hampton Inn Invitational hosted by Campbell. The Colonials picked up wins against Atlantic 10 members George Washington and St. Bonaventure and fell to Virginia and Seton Hall.
Western Carolina (5-4) is coming off a 2-1 loss to Savannah State at the Lipton Florida Invitational. The Catamounts have picked up wins against Charleston Southern, UNC-Wilmington, Maine, and N.C. Central. WCU’s losses have come at the hands of fifth-ranked Florida, UMKC, and USC Upstate.
Following the 49ers Invitational, Charlotte will be up against its first road test of the season when it faces North Carolina on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. followed by the Auburn Invitational on March 1-3.
