Charlotte 49ers director of
athletics Judy Rose and men's basketball coach Alan Major have announced that
the 49ers have suspended junior guard DeMario Mayfield indefinitely for
violation of athletic department policy.
"We are disappointed to make this
announcement," Rose said. "Our policies are in place for a reason and our
student-athletes are expected to abide by them."
Mayfield, who moved into the
starting lineup last week against Xavier, is averaging a team-high 11.7 points
with 3.6 rebounds this season. He has recorded 14 double-figure scoring games
this season and 33 for his career.
A transfer from the University of
Georgia, Mayfield is playing in his second season with the 49ers. He earned his
degree from UNC Charlotte in December.
"We are disappointed in the
decisions that DeMario has made which has led to the suspension," Major said. "We
will stay the course and we will rally around each other."
The 49ers will not comment further on this
matter, at this time.
