DURHAM, NC - The Charlotte 49ers men's tennis team (2-3) fell on the road at the fifth-ranked Duke Blue Devils (3-0), 9-0.
"Duke was as good as advertised," Charlotte coach Billy Boykin said. "They do a great job of pressuring you with consistency and power. This is as good a team as there is in the nation and we played credible tennis from start to finish."
Duke won all three singles matches to claim the doubles point. At number one doubles, Charlotte's Jack Williams and Forrest Edwards lost to Duke's Henrique Cunha and Raphael Hemmeler, the number one ranked doubles team in the nation, 8-2. At number two doubles, Charlotte's Alex Callott and Paul Cisti lost to Duke's Michael Redlicki and Jason Tahir, who are the 39th -ranked doubles team in the nation, 8-2. At number three doubles, Charlotte's Jordi Massalle Ferrer and Krysztof Kwasniewicz lost to Duke's Fred Saba and Chris Mengel, who are the 37th-ranked doubles team in the nation, 8-2.
The two teams prior to the start of the match agreed to play eight singles matches. Duke won all eight singles matches to win the match. At number one singles, Charlotte's Williams lost to Duke's Cunha, who is the 11th -ranked singles player in the nation, 6-0, 6-0. At number two singles, Charlotte's Edwards lost to Duke's Redlicki, who is the 14th -ranked singles player in the nation, 6-2, 6-2. At number three singles, Charlotte's Massalle Ferrer lost to Duke's Saba, who is the 23rd -ranked singles player in the nation, 6-2, 6-3. At number four singles, Charlotte's Calott lost to Duke's Mengel, who is the 46th -ranked player in the nation, 6-4, 6-2. At number five singles, Charlotte's Cisti lost to Duke's Hemmeler, who is the 38th -ranked player in the nation, 6-1, 6-2. At number six singles, Charlotte's Kwasniewicz lost to Duke's Tahir, who is ranked number 123 in the nation, 6-3, 6-0. At number seven singles, Charlotte's Nate Shanok lost to Duke's Josh Levine, 6-2, 6-4. At number eight singles, Charlotte's Hector Linares lost to Duke's Daniel McCall, 6-1, 6-0.Charlotte returns home to begin a five match home stand against Tennessee Tech at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex, Saturday, January 26.
