Charlotte, NC - Charlotte 49ers freshman forward Willie Clayton was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week after scoring 16 points and grabbing 16 rebounds in the 49ers' 72-63 overtime win over UNC Asheville last Wednesday.
Clayton's double-double against UNC Asheville was his second straight double-double and his third double-double of the season.
Clayton leads the 49ers in rebounding at 7.3 boards per game. He is third on the team in scoring at 8.9 points per game.
Clayton is the fifth different Niner to garner Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors. Pierria Henry (earned A-10 Rookie of the Week honors twice last season), and Chris Braswell (earned A-10 Rookie of the Week honors three times during the 2009-10 season). Shamarr Bowden (2009-10) and An'Juan Wilderness (2007-08) were the other 49ers freshmen to garner A-10 Rookie of the Week honors.
Clayton and the rest of the 49ers return to action this Wednesday, January 9 when they begin Atlantic 10 play in Halton Arena against La Salle.
