Charlotte, NC -Charlotte 49ers men's soccer senior midfielder Donnie Smith was chosen as one of 54 college seniors who have been invited to participate in the 2013 adidas MLS Player Combine in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, January 11-15. All invited players will be eligible for selection in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft presented by adidas which will take place on January 17 in Indianapolis, Ind.
The initial player list was determined by a panel of Division I college coaches, representing all conferences, who nominated and voted for players in conjunction with MLS representatives. These players will be joined by generation adidas players, additional collegiate players from NCAA Division II and III schools, NAIA schools, and Division I alternates.
Smith, who earned All-Atlantic 10 honors three times in his career, was named Atlantic 10 Midfielder of the Year this past season. He earned first-team All-Atlantic 10 honors in 2012 and 2010. He was a second-team All-Atlantic 10 selection in 2011. Smith scored four goals and recorded four assists this past season. Smith scored game-winning goals against South Carolina, Richmond and Saint Louis.
Last season, former 49ers standouts Charles Rodriguez and Evan James were invited to the MLS Combine. This past season, James played for the Montreal Impact after being the first pick of the MLS Supplemental Draft. Rodriguez, who was drafted in the third round of last season's MLS Supplemental Draft by the DC United, played this past season for the USL Pro League's Wilmington Hammerheads.
