Charlotte, NC- The 23rd-ranked Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team (15-3-3) will play 6th -ranked and third-seed Georgetown (17-3-1) on the road in Washington, D.C. in the second-round of the NCAA Tournament, Sunday, November 18 at 1 pm. The 49ers advanced to the second-round of the NCAA Tournament after a 3-2 victory over UAB at Transamerica Field, yesterday. In that game, Jennings Rex recorded his fourth multiple goal scoring game of the season with the 49ers' first two goals. Then, Giuseppe Gentile scored his third game-winning goal of the season for the 49ers.
Last season, the 49ers advanced to the College Cup Final for the first time in school history. Charlotte has reached the College Cup twice in 1996 and 2011. The 49ers are 7-5-4 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
Currently, Gentile and Rex are tied for the most NCAA Tournament goals scored in school history with four goals apiece.
Rex leads the team with 11 goals. Gentile is second on the team with nine goals. Donnie Smith, who was recently named A-10 Midfielder of the Year, is third on the team with four goals. Gentile, Rex and Smith each have three game-winning goals this season. Gentile leads the 49ers with seven assists. Isaac Caughran and Tyler Gibson are tied for second on the team with six assists apiece.
The 49ers defense behind the play of first-team All-Atlantic 10 selection goalkeeper Klay Davis and defenders Anthony Perez, Thomas Allen, who also earned first-team All-Atlantic 10 honors, Nick Barnhorst, David Mayer, Aaron Weldon and Biko Bradnock-Brennan, who was named to the A-10 All-Rookie team, has been stellar this season. The 49ers have recorded nine shutouts and limited 17 foes to a goal or less this season.
