The NCAA, today, announced that the city of Charlotte and host Charlotte 49ers have been awarded the Second and Third Rounds of the 2015 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. The games will be played at Time Warner Cable Arena, Friday and Sunday, Mar. 20-22, 2015.
"We are extremely excited to have been selected, along with our wonderful partners, to host the 2nd and 3rd round of the 2015 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Time Warner Cable Arena," said 49ers Director of Athletics Judy Rose. "I think that it is obvious that the committee feels that Charlotte does a first class job in hosting and that our community embraces the event. It's wonderful to be able to bring these games to the city and the great basketball fans we have here."
The city of Charlotte is tied for third all-time with 86 tournament games hosted in its history. This will be the 22nd time that the city has hosted NCAA Division I Men's Basketball games.
The 49ers last hosted NCAA Tournament rounds in 2011 when the second and third rounds came to Time Warner Cable Arena. The 49ers also hosted the 2008 NCAA East Regional at Time Warner Cable Arena, which was then called Charlotte Bobcats Arena.
"It has long been our goal to make Time Warner Cable Arena the premier venue for sports and entertainment in the Carolinas and we are thrilled with today's announcement by the NCAA," said Bobcats Sports & Entertainment President & COO Fred Whitfield. "We've had great success with the tournament at Time Warner Cable Arena and we look forward to hosting another world-class event in 2015."
The Charlotte 49ers NCAA Tournament hosting history includes the 1994 NCAA Final Four, which was played at Charlotte Coliseum, then home of the Charlotte Hornets.
