Six 49ers Earn All-Atlantic 10 Honors

Charlotte, N.C. - Six members of the Charlotte 49ers nationally-ranked men's soccer team earned All-Atlantic 10 honors. Senior Donnie Smith (Matthews, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) was named Atlantic 10 Midfielder of the Year. Smith also earned first-team All-Atlantic 10 honors. Joining Smith on the All-Atlantic 10 first-team are juniors midfielder Tyler Gibson (Knoxville, Tenn. /Knoxville Catholic), defender Thomas Allen (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and goalkeeper Klay Davis (Jacksonville, N.C./Jacksonville). Sophomore forward Giuseppe Gentile (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell) earned second-team All-Atlantic 10 honors. Freshman defender Biko Bradnock-Brennan (London, England) was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team. Gibson also was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic team.

Smith is the second Niner to earn A-10 Midfielder of the Year honors, since Gibson earned the award in 2010. Smith has earned All-Atlantic 10 honors three times in his career and he earned first-team All-Atlantic 10 honors in 2010 as well. Smith has scored four goals and recorded three assists this season. He scored game-winning goals against South Carolina, Richmond and Saint Louis.

Allen and Davis have both earned All-Atlantic 10 honors for the first time in their careers. Allen and Davis anchor a 49ers defense which has recorded nine shutouts and limited 15 foes to a goal or less this season. The 49ers defense has only allowed six goals in Atlantic 10 play. Charlotte has only allowed two penalty kick goals over their last eight games.

Allen, who earned National Team of the Week honors earlier this season, has scored two goals including the game-winning goal in the 49ers 1-0 win over #14 Coastal Carolina this season. He has also recorded an assist.

Davis was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com's National Team of the Week earlier this season after helping the 49ers post road shutouts against Saint Louis and Butler. This season, Davis has a 0.69 goals against average with 43 saves and 8.5 shutouts.

Gibson, who was named to the Hermann Award watch list at the beginning of the season, is a three-time first-team All-Atlantic 10 selection. This season, Gibson has scored two goals and dished out five assists. He scored the game-winning goal in the 49ers 3-0 win over Stony Brook earlier this season.

Gibson, who has a 3.84 GPA in Marketing, earned A-10 Academic All-Conference team honors last season as well. Last week, he was named to the Capital One Academic All-District team.

Gentile, who was a second-team All-Atlantic 10 selection as well as being named A-10 Rookie of the Year last year, is tied for the team lead with eight goals. He also tied for second on the team with five assists. Gentile scored game-winning goals against Kentucky and George Washington. This season, he scored three goals and recorded two assists in the 49ers victories over Massachusetts and Rhode Island. For his performance in those two games, he was named TopDrawerSoccer.com's National Player of the Week as well as Atlantic 10 Player of the Week.

Bradnock-Brennan has played an integral role on a 49ers defense which has recorded nine shutouts and limited 15 foes to a goal or less this season. He is the tenth different Niner to earn A-10 All-Rookie team honors. The 49ers have now had at least one player named to the A-10 All-Rookie team in each of Charlotte's eight years in the league.

Allen, Bradnock-Brennan, Davis, Gentile, Gibson, Smith and the rest of the 49ers nationally-ranked men's soccer team opens play in the A-10 Tournament against Duquesne, Thursday, November 8 at 8 pm. The 49ers are hosting the Atlantic 10 Tournament at Transamerica Field, November 8-11.
