Charlotte volleyball concludes the 2012 season with a Thursday night road match at Atlantic 10 Conference foe VCU. It will be the final match in the careers of seniors Jenna Litoborski, Shannon McClean, Bianca Rouse and Lily Vera. The 49ers sit at 10-15 overall through 25 matches, with a 2-11 A-10 mark. VCU enters play Thursday with a 23-5 mark, 9-4 in the league. The Rams will finish no worse than a tie for third in the A-10 standings at the end of the season.
The four seniors, honored before the final home match Sunday against Xavier, have seen 54 career wins in four seasons at Charlotte, and 22 in the league. In the opening set of the Sunday match, Litoborski became the 17th player in program history to cross the 1,000-dig plateau for her career. She finished with 20 in the match and sits at 1,013, passing Paula Smith (1985-88) for 16th on the all-time list at Charlotte. She is also sixth at Charlotte with a 2.89 digs per set average.
Rouse (Columbia, S.C. / Keenan HS) sits ninth on the all-time Charlotte list in kills, currently with 1,242. She was the 17th player in team history to reach the four-digit kills line at the start of this season. She also ranks sixth in school history for kills per set and will break a tie for sixth by playing in her 114th and final career match Thursday.
McClean (Cypress, Tex. / Cy-Woods HS) posted a career-high 30 aces last year and is second on the team currently with 16. She is also tied for fifth in blocking and is fifth in kills, while Vera (Anderson, S.C. / Stone Bridge HS) has posted a 10.41 assists-per-set average, one of four setters in the league with more than 10 assists per set this season.
After nearly a decade since last facing VCU, the Niners lost 3-0 to the Rams in October in Charlotte as conference foes once again. The two programs were in the Sun Belt Conference together from 1979 to 1991, moving to the Metro Conference together from 91-95, facing off 10 times as league opponents. VCU joined the A-10 this season as the two resume their conference rivalry for a pair of matches before the Niners depart for Conference USA next year. Charlotte is 11-14 against VCU in the all-time series.
