|Green Evens Series to Force Deciding Sunday Finale|
A four-run second inning by the Green team evened the best-of-three Green/White Niner World Series, forcing a winner-take-all game three as Charlotte baseball completes fall practice at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium Saturday afternoon.
After suffering a 9-5 defeat on Friday, Green got out to the an early lead by scoring the four runs in the second, and never trailing after that point to level the series.
After a flyout, back-to-back singles from sophomore outfielder Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) and redshirt sophomore designated hitter Patrick Raley (Franklin, Tenn.) got things started in the frame. A ground rule double that bounced over the right centerfield fence from outfielder Michael Green (Richmond, Va. / Thomas Dale HS) drove in one run and a passed ball brought home a second run before an error on a ground ball allowed Green to score and an RBI double from sophomore Leland Clemmons (Chesapeake, Va. / Portsmouth Christian HS) drove in the fourth run for the insurmountable lead by Green.
The White team tried to respond with a pair of runs in the fourth. Outfielder J.J. Elseser (Brunswick, Ga.) started the inning with a double and redshirt senior Justin Roland added his third extra-base hit of the series, an RBI double to left center for the squad's first run. A double from outfielder Desmond Roberts (Bellevue, Neb. / Garden City CC) plated Roland to cut the lead to two runs.
Green extended the lead to 6-2 after a Clemmons single turned into a run on an RBI single from Elwood for the 5-2 lead.
White scored a run in the fifth on a passed ball and another in the seventh and final inning on Roland's fifth RBI of the weekend, a groundout to score infielder Kory Shumate (Greensboro, N.C. / Grimsley HS), who had singled with one out in the frame.
Jason Harris (Austin Tex. / Barton County CC) gave up three runs, but struck out three in his start. Junior Tyler Barnette (Hickory, N.C.) struck out three in relief for the win. He pitched 2.2 innings, with three walks and one hit.
White's Sean Geoghegqan (High Point, N.C. / Southwest Guilford) allowed five runs in four innings, with three strikeouts in the loss. Reliever John Hamilton (Strongsville, Ohio) tossed three scoreless innings of relief, with three strikeouts.
The series finale takes place at 2 p.m. Sunday. Junior right hander Brock Hudgens (Jamestown, N.C. / Southwest Guilford HS) will start for White opposite Green's junior transfer Hunter May (Cornelius, N.C. / Pitt CC). Admission is free to the public.
