Charlotte 49ers baseball puts in the final week of team practice this fall, culminating in the Green/White Niner World Series, a three-game set that takes place this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. Friday's game one will commence at 3 p.m., with the Saturday and Sunday start times scheduled for 2 p.m. Admission is free for the weekend's slate of seven-inning games in the team's final showcase this semester.
Teams were selected by position and for balance, with the senior players acting as player/coach for each squad. Charlotte's pair of senior team managers, Chris Hinnau (Green) and Nick Immel (White), will also split off to help manage the teams during the weekend.
A pair of right-handed freshmen will start Friday's opening game, with Adam Huffman (Burlington, N.C. / Western Alamance HS) going for White against Green's Micah Wells (Pfafftown, N.C. / Mt. Tabor HS). Saturday, the pitching matchup is a pair of lefties with freshman Sean Geoghegan (High Point, N.C. / Southwest Guilford HS) against junior transfer Jason Harris (Austin, Tex. / Barton County CC) on the mound. Junior right-handers will anchor the weekend with junior Brock Hudgens (Jamestown, N.C. / Southwest Guilford HS) pitching for White opposed by junior transfer Hunter May (Cornelius, N.C. / Pitt CC) for Green.
The senior player/coaches for White will be outfielder J.J. Elseser (Brunswick, Ga.), left-handed closer John Hamilton (Strongsville, Ohio) right-handed pitcher Sean Pope (Huntersville, N.C. / North Mecklenburg HS) and redshirt senior shortstop Justin Roland (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS). White will be led by third baseman Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS), righty reliever Wes Hatley (Norwood, N.C. / South Stanly HS) and outfielder Michael Green (Richmond, Va. / Thomas Dale HS).
The teams will work out on Tuesday on the field at 3 p.m., while players will go through strength and conditioning Wednesday before an off day Thursday in advance of the series.
This week marks the end of the allowable phase for the team to work out together for the semester. Players will continue to participate in strength and conditioning and small-group workouts throughout the remainder of the semester on a limited basis.
Kids and family members from the Miracle League are set to attend games on Saturday and Sunday. Charlotte baseball spent their fall Saturdays working with those kids at the University YMCA's new facility as part of their community service efforts.
The 2013 season will begin for Charlotte on Friday, February 15, for the first of 36 scheduled home dates in an opening weekend series against Delaware State. The 49ers will also serve as the host for the 2013 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championships, May 22-25.
