Emmanuelle Briant will play for fifth place in the B1 singles flight Sunday afternoon
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charlotte women's tennis
team earned four singles and three doubles triumphs during second day action at
the season-opening College of Charleston Invitational Saturday in Charleston,
S.C. All of the 49ers singles wins came in the consolation side of the flights
with three players advancing to Sunday's consolation finals with chances at
claiming fifth place in their respective brackets.
In addition, senior Anna Ekelund will square off against Stetson's Clarke Tatje in the A2 third-place match Sunday afternoon. On the opposite side of the flight, freshman Tyler Baker will be aiming for a fifth-place result after knocking off Davidson's Nisha Crouser 7-6 (5), 6-4. Baker will meet Coastal Carolina's Libby Scott. Junior Emmanuelle Briant set herself up for a fifth-place showdown with Coastal Carolina's Vanessa Ortiz Sunday after handing Adri Lochner of Samford a 6-3, ret. Decision in the B1 consolation semifinals. Lastly, freshman Jessica Pérez will face Davidson's Tamara Hill in a fifth-place match in the B2 bracket. Pérez garnered a 6-3, 6-2 triumph against the Wildcats' Courtney McCray in their consolation semifinal meeting. Doubles action began Saturday with two flights and a set of Round Robin action. Ekelund and sophomore Lisa Gosselius bounced back from a quarterfinal round loss in the A1 bracket to defeat Armstrong Atlantic State's Clara Perez and Jennifer Rink the A1 consolation semifinals. The Charlotte tandem will open final day play with a contest against Coastal Carolina's Kourtney Kowal and Libby Scott for fifth place. Baker and sophomore Natsuko Takayanagi captured an 8-5 win against Samford's Kristin Lewis and Lochner in the A2 quarterfinals before dropping their semifinal match 8-2 to host College of Charleston's Jenny Falcone and Kelly Kambourelis. The 49er duo will look to walk away with a third-place finish, as it meets the Cougars' Sam Maddox and Christin Newman Sunday morning. Briant and Pérez collected the lone Charlotte victory in Round Robin action, posting an 8-1 decision against the split pairing of Coastal Carolina's Nicole Boyle and Samford's Sarah Gail Niebur. All action at the tournament concludes Sunday at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
