Coral Gables, Fla. -- The six-time defending champion Charlotte 49ers are in third place after an opening round of two-under par, 286 at the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship at Heron Bay Golf Club.

Senior Paul Ferrier and freshman Raoul Menard both carded opening rounds of two-under par and are tied for third place, individually, one stroke off the first round lead.

George Washington has the opening round lead at four-under par, 284, one stroke ahead of second-place Richmond (-3, 285). Charlotte is two strokes back at two-under.  Xavier is in fourth place at two-over par, four strokes behind the 49ers and six strokes off the lead.

"Paul and Raoul had pretty nice rounds," said 49ers head coach Ryan Cabbage.  "Paul did some really nice things and had seven birdies.  Overall, I thought we played OK.  There are some things we need to do a little better with.  We'll look at those and make some adjustments and come out and play well tomorrow and put ourselves in position for Sunday."

Senior Olafur Loftsson added an even-par round of 72 and Rafael Guerrero added a two-over par 74.  Tyler Mitchell shot +6, 78.

"All in all it was a prett good day," Cabbage added.  "We had 21 birdies, today, and there are birdies out there.  We'll take it one round at a time and break into three segments.    We'll learn from this one and get back out there ready to go tomorrow."
