Senior Joe Yermal starts for the 51st time Saturday to tie the programs's all-time record.
Charlotte continues a seven-game road trip with a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series at George Washington, starting Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Barcroft Park, which is under construction at the current time. The 49ers are 17-23 overall, 5-9 in league play. George Washington is finishing a 10-game home stand with a record of 17-25, 3-9 in the A-10. The 49ers need some victories to get into the Atlantic 10 Tournament, which takes only the top six teams in the standings. Charlotte will start redshirt senior righty Andrew Smith (4-6, 4.67, 44 K, 20 BB) against Colonials junior lefty Brian Derner (1-6, 4.79, 38 K, 38 BB) on Friday. Saturday, Charlotte redshirt senior Joe Yermal (5-3, 3.17, 25 K, 12 BB) will tie the program's all-time mark with his 51st career start against sophomore right-hander Aaron Weisberg (1-5, 2.34, 43 K, 27 BB). Sunday, sophomore Tyler Barnette (1-3, 4.67, 15 K, 14 BB) will make the start. George Washington has not named a starter for the series finale. Both teams have played a pair of midweek games, with Charlotte falling in a pair of contests against ACC opponents. GW won a pair of home games, against Maryland-Eastern Shore Tuesday and Navy Wednesday. The 49ers have won three of four in conference, but the Colonials have dropped five-straight conference games. Charlotte sports a pair of hitters with active streaks entering the weekend, both from Salisbury and East Rowan High School. Shortstop Justin Roland has a hit in his last 16 games, the longest active streak in the A-10. Corbin Shive has reached base safely in his last 24 contests, the second-longest active streak in the league. The 49ers will have their conference bye week next week and have filled that with a three-game series with the fourth ACC opponent of the season, a weekend in Atlanta to face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, starting Saturday for a doubleheader. |
