|Baseball Forces Tie in Sixth, Falls to Late Duke Rally, 4-1|
Hits and baserunners were hard to come by Wednesday night as Duke rallied for three late runs to outlast Charlotte 4-1 in non-conference baseball action at Jack McCoombs Field Wednesday night in non-conference baseball action. The Blue Devils improve to 15-4 on the season, while the 49ers fall to 12-5. Charlotte has lost back-to-back games for the first time this season. The loss was also the second on the road in as many games for Charlotte.
The Blue Devils got on the board in the first after a walk, a single and a wild pitch made the score 1-0. Charlotte pitchers then sent down 16 of the next 18 Duke hitters to keep the one-run margin.
Duke starters allowed just on hit and two walks in the first five innings until the 49ers tied the game in the sixth. Sophomore Michael Green (Richmond, Va. / Thomas Dale HS), making his first start of the season in center, reached on an infield error and later scored on an RBI single from right fielder Justin Wilson (Canton, N.C. / Pisgah HS).
Duke retook the lead in the seventh on a sacrifice fly before adding a pair if insurance runs in the eighth on the first career home run from outfielder Chris Marconcini in the eighth. The runs were the first allowed by Charlotte in an eighth inning this season.
Wilson had two of Charlotte's three hits, after recording three of Charlotte's four hits in Tuesday night's 7-1 loss to Wake Forest.
The bullpens factored in the decisions in the game. Blue Devil reliever Joe Pedevillano got the win in his first appearance on the mound this season. The junior allowed one hit and one walk in the last 3.1 innings, recording six strikeouts.
Charlotte reliever Chad Rothlin (Hickory, N.C. / Fred T. Foard HS) took the loss (1-2). In two innings, he gave up one run on one hit and a walk. All four Charlotte pitchers gave up one run each in the contest.
The 49ers begin a three-game weekend series against Harvard, beginning Friday night at 6 p.m.
