CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte 49ers men’s golf team will look to continue its forward momentum into this weekend’s action at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate hosted by Ohio State. The Niners are coming off of a tied for third hosting their own Irish Creek Collegiate in Kannapolis last weekend.

“We have a quick turnaround following Irish Creek last weekend but I think we will benefit from that,” commented Head Coach Ryan Cabbage. “There were a lot of positives to take from the weekend and I really think we can build on those and play well again this week.”

The Niners will send Thomas Rowland, Franco Castro, Raoul Menard, Riley Davenport and Daniel Brantley to the Ohio State event playing the same Scarlet Course that hosted last year’s NCAA Regional tournament.

“Thomas, Raoul and Franco were all in our line up for the NCAA Regional at Ohio State last year so they are familiar with the golf course,” continued Cabbage. “We should be very comfortable as we prepare for the event.”

Charlotte finished the Irish Creek event tied for third with nationally-ranked Wake Forest behind tournament champions Georgia State and second place North Florida, both nationally-ranked as well. The Niners led the entire field after round one posting a 287 and had the third-best round two going lower to 284. Toughest conditions on Sunday saw Charlotte card a 300 as a team to slipped down to third.

Rowland, Conference USA’s reigning golfer of the week, fired a career-best 210 (-3) to take fourth place honors. Rowland started his weekend with a career-best round of three-under 68 following that up with a two-under 69 to share the overnight individual lead. Rowland back up his 36 holes on Saturday with a 73 on Sunday to finish fourth overall out of 90 golfers.

Castro concluded Irish Creek with a three-over 216 finishing tied for 12th overall shooting a consistent 73-72-71 during his three rounds of play. Rowland and Castro stood out for the Niners overall while the three remaining team players and two individuals all wrapped up within five shots of each other.

Menard rebounded from a four-over 75 in round one to shoot a one-under 70 in round two. Menard would finish at 223 after his third round 78. Davenport, along with Dan Hendry, would wrap up team scoring with identical rounds of 73-73-78 to finish at +11, one shot behind Menard.

Playing as individuals, Brantley improved nine shots from round one to round two after a one-under 70 on his second trip around the Club at Irish Creek. Brantley would finish three shots ahead of fellow individual and teammate Seth Gandy who carded a three-day total of 228.

The Scarlet Course at Ohio State will play to a layout of 7,455 yards at a par 71. Both rounds will begin at 8:30 a.m. with 36 holes on Saturday followed by the usual 18 holes for a final round on Sunday. The 13 other teams joining Charlotte and host Ohio State will be Ball State, Cleveland State, Eastern Michigan, Georgia Tech, Kent State, Liberty, Miami (OH), Missouri, Northwestern, Oregon State, Penn State, UAB and UNLV.
