|Volleyball Falls in Three at Rice Sunday|
Senior captain Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) put together another double-digit kills performance, but the 49ers came up short in Texas, as the Rice Owls upended Charlotte 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-17) Sunday in Conference USA play. The 49ers slip to 10-11 overall, 0-6 in the league. Rice is now 6-14 overall, 3-3 in C-USA matches.
The tightest set was the first, with seven ties and three lead changes in the two-point Owls victory. The 49ers got out to a quick 4-1 lead, extending to 8-3 in the early going. At that point, Rice reeled off six in a row to take a 9-8 lead. Charlotte then went on a 5-1 run before the match went back and forth until the Owls broke out of an 18-all tie with two straight points, holding the lead to the end of the opening set.
Rice ran away with the second set, starting at 5-1 and extending to 10-3 before winning by 10 into intermission.
The 49ers got down 4-1 in the third, but fought back to a tie score at nine each. An 8-3 run at that point put the Owls up five, keeping the lead the rest of the way.
Charlotte had an attack percentage of just .046 in the three-set affair. Defensively, sophomore libero Michelle Hovey (Raleigh, N.C. / Lighthouse) recorded 14 digs in the match, and sophomore setter Britney Leigh Held (Brookfield, Wis. / Brookfield Central HS) had 23 assists Sunday.
The 49ers will play next at home Friday night at 7 p.m. against Tulsa. The match is the 12th-Annual Dig Pink match, with free pink t-shirts being given away to fans entering the contest, while supplies last. Charlotte will participate in numerous fundraising activities this week towards breast cancer awareness and research.
