|Menard Tenth as Charlotte Finishes Sixth in Durham|
The Charlotte golf moved up a spot to finish sixth after the final round of the Rod Myers Invitational, hosted by Duke at the Duke Golf Course in Durham. Charlotte passed Conference USA foe East Carolina to place ahead of the Pirates by one stroke, with a six-over 294 to end the tournament at nine-over par (288-291-294 – 873). Charlotte’s score of nine over is the best in four tournaments so far this season, while the sixth-place finish ties for the best of the season to this point.
Sophomore Raoul Menard (Ange-Gardien, Quebec / Beaulieu) recorded his eighth Top-10 finish of his career as he was the tenth and final golfer under par at two-under (71-70-73 – 214). He posted 12 birdies in his four rounds, with a one-over 73 in the final round Sunday, his only above-par round of the weekend. Four of his nine tournament rounds this season have been at or below par. His average score this season is 72.89, second only by a stroke to senior Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga. / LSU).
Castro shot an even par 72 in the final round, to finish at two over (73-73-72 – 218). His 11 birdies were second-best for Charlotte in the weekend. He finished 15th in the 66-player field.
Sophomore Thomas Rowland (Consett, England / St. Bedes Catholic School and Sixth Form College) had a rough final round of 77 to finish at six-over (70-75-77 – 222). He was tied by sophomore Daniel Brantley (Asheboro, N.C.) , who was three-over in the final round (74-73-75 – 222).
After a rough first day, the third-best round of the day came in by sophomore John Boehme (Jacksonville Beach, Fla. / Sandalwood HS), who finished with a two-over 74 to help the team score.
Charlotte had two golfers playing as individuals. Freshman Seth Gandy (Huntersville, N.C. / Hough HS) had a final-round 75 to finish at three-over (72-72-75) for the weekend and a tie for 16th place, tied for the best finish by the 11 individuals. . Sophomore Riley Davenport (Woodstock, Ga. / Sequoya HS) turned in a four-over 76 in his final round for a four-over finish (75-69-76 – 220) and a tie for 22nd.
The 49ers finish the fall semester portion of the schedule out in California in the Pacific Invitational, which takes place in Stockton, Calif. from October 31 to November 2.
