|XC set to compete at Royals Challenge|
Charlotte, N.C.- The Charlotte 49ers men’s and women’s cross country teams take a short drive to McAlpine park this Friday, Oct. 11th to compete in the Royals Challenge hosted by Queens University of Charlotte.
The Niners are coming off a tough outing finishing towards the back of the field on both sides. “It was just not our day. Coming off our recent success last week, this was our let down week,” said Coach Ed Schlichter. The 49ers look to rebound from that outing preparing for the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet in Terre Haute, IN next week. “We are moving full steam ahead.”
The Royals Challenge features many of the teams that competed in the Charlotte Invitational along with new competitors. The field is comprised mainly of Division II squads and a handful of Division I teams but that does not mean the competition is not strong. Duke and Liberty are ranked in the southeast region at #4 and #7 respectively for the men’s squads and #3 Duke on the women’s side. Other Division I programs that are competing include: Charleston Southern, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian, UNCG, South Carolina, and Western Carolina.
On the Division II side, the Royals Challenge features eight of the top ten in the southeast region: Mount Olive, Georgia Regents, King, Mars Hill, UNC Pembroke, Queens, Wingate and Anderson.
“We need to focus on getting results. This past week we didn’t get a ton of positive results. We are trying to sneak in some positive results this week and next.”
The women’s 5K race will begin at 4:30 pm followed by the men’s 8K race at 5:15 pm.
