The Charlotte 49ers were able to only manage four hits as USC Upstate starter Chris Cox tossed a 100-pitch compete-game shutout to propel the Spartans to a 6-0 home win over the 49ers Wednesday night in midweek non-conference action at Harley Park. Both teams are 17-11 after the game.

Cox allowed one walk, hit a batter and gave up four hits in the effort, facing 33 batters in the contest. It was the third time Charlotte was shutout this season.

A pair of errors in the fourth allowed a pair of unearned runs against Charlotte starter Jason Harris (Austin, Tex. / Barton County CC) when the Spartans got an RBI double from Tyler Lesch and later a solo homer from Trey Richardson.

USC Upstate scored three more in the fifth, the first coming home on a two-RBI single from Tyler Miller, and an RBI single two batters later plated a third run for the 5-0 lead.

The Spartans got their sixth run of the game in the bottom of the seventh after the lead batter walked and stole second. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an RBI single.

Harris took the loss, slipping to 1-2 on the season. In 4.1 innings pitched, he allowed four hits and struck out a pair. Three of the five runs charged to him were earned.

Cox improved to 2-2 with the win, the second complete-game shutout of the season for the Spartans, who turned the trick at home to Marshall in March.

Justin Seager, Justin Roland, Grant Dunnegan and Patrick Raley had Charlotte's four hits on the night in the two-hour game.

The 49ers will remain out of conference with the A-10 bye this weekend. The 49ers host UNC Asheville, starting with Fireworks night on Friday. The series opener starts at 6 p.m.
