Charlotte sophomore designated hitter Derek Gallello (Fredericksburg, Va. / Riverbend HS) had two hits, but the 49ers suffered their second shutout loss of the season in a 3-0 loss to Duke at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park Wednesday night in non-conference baseball action. The loss ends Charlotte’s four-game win streak and drops the 49ers to 14-6 overall. Duke is 11-10.
A solo homerun to leadoff the bottom of the first by second baseman Andy Perez was all the Blue Devils needed, but two hits and a walk led to a pair of sacrifice flies in the third and the scoring was done for the day.
Charlotte got one runner to third base in the game, which lasted just two hours, 16 minutes.
Duke starter James Marvel got the win (2-2) after seven shutout innings, scattering five hits and a walk. Andrew Istler earned his fifth save with a scoreless ninth, giving up a two-out walk.
Charlotte starter Wes Hatley (Norwood, N.C. / South Stanly HS) took the loss. He gave up the first inning homer and pitched just the first inning, allowing three hits.
Sean Geoghegan (High Point, N.C. / Southwest Guilford HS) and Micah Wells (Pfafftown, N.C. / Mt. Tabor HS) pitched the final 4.1 innings of scores baseball for Charlotte. Geoghegan tossed a scoreless inning with one strikeout and Wells pitched the final 3.1 frames, allowing four hits, but getting one strikeout.
Charlotte opens Atlantic 10 Conference play in a three-game series at Pitt Field against Richmond. The series starts Friday at 3 p.m. Tyler Barnette (Hickory, N.C.) will start the series opener for the 49ers.
NOTES: Sophomore second baseman Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) had a hit in the first inning and extended his team-best streak to 21 games reaching base safely, dating back to last season.
