|Charlotte unable to hold off Buccaneers comeback|
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charlotte women's tennis team won the doubles point but could not close out a tight match at Charleston Southern Monday, dropping a 4-3 decision in a non-conference meeting.
The 49ers earned an early point for a 1-0 lead by clinching the doubles with victories in two of the three matches. The top doubles team of senior Anna Ekelund and sophomore Lisa Grosselius continued its solid spring by posting an 8-5 decision over Alia Nour and Angelica Sidorenko in the No. 1 contest.
Charlotte (6-4) then clinched the point when the No. 3 tandem of Jessica Pérez and Alexandra Zinn handed Susita Das and Marketa Placha an 8-6 setback.
Despite the deficit, the Lady Buccaneers were able to come-from-behind for the overall team win.
The Niners' lone two victories came at the No. 3 and No. 6 slots. Grosselius garnered a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Sidorenko during the No. 3 match, while Iveta Guneva was able to rally past Das in the No. 6 position 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
Charleston Southern (3-4) tallied three-straight victories and was leading in a decisive third set at the No. 2 spot when Charlotte's Natsuko Takayanagi was forced to retire due to injury.
The 49ers will look to snap a three-match skid when it travels to Coastal Carolina for a 2:30 p.m. Wednesday contest.
