Charlotte starting pitcher Tyler Barnette (Hickory, N.C.) set a new career high with nine strikeouts and got his first win of the season in the 49ers 7-4 home win over Pfeiffer University Thursday afternoon at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium in non-conference baseball action. The win pushes Charlotte to 3-1 overall and 2-0 at home this season. The win was also the 999th (999-844-6) in the 35th year of baseball at Charlotte. Pfeiffer is now 1-10 on the season. The game was scheduled Monday as both programs lost games to weather-related issues last weekend.

The 49ers got on the board in the second inning with four runs after four hits and a pair of fielder's choice ground balls. Redshirt senior third baseman Justin Roland (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) had his first hit of the season, a double, and scored on a RBI fielder's choice by freshman second baseman Matt Creech (Moultrie, Ga. / Colquitt Co. HS). Outfielder J.J. Elseser (Brunswick, Ga. / Presbyterian College) also had an RBI fielder's choice, with outfielders Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) and Justin Seager (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus HS) driving in a run with their second hits of the game to that point.

Pfeiffer answered with the first of two solo home runs in the game, the first on the first pitch of the third by designated hitter Johnny Brown, Jr. down the left field line and the second in the sixth frame by catcher Jon Gray to left field.

Barnette had five strikeouts in the first four innings, recording 1-2-3 frames in four of those first five frames. He went eight innings, allowing six hits, including the two solo homers on 102 pitches. He did not allow a walk in the contest.

Charlotte scored in the even-numbered innings, scoring one each in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings. Elwood drove in the runs in the fourth and eighth with a double and a single as part of his 4-for-4 day at the plate. His four hits were a career high while his three RBI tied his career-high total. Creech had his first extra-base hits of the year, a pair of doubles, in the contest. He scored a game-high three times. The first of two hits by senior shortstop Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) drove in Creech in the sixth. Basen has a hit in all four 49ers games this year, and he extended his career-best hitting streak to 13 games, dating back to last season. He leads the team with nine hits and a .500 batting average. His seven RBI also are the team high.

After a pair of Pfeiffer runs came across in the ninth, freshman Sean Geoghegan (High point, N.C. / Southwest Guilford HS) came in to get the save in his first collegiate appearance, getting a fielder's choice groundout to the only batter he faced.

Charlotte's next scheduled contest is Tuesday at Wake Forest at 4 p.m. The 49ers are attempting to add another last-minute game to fill the third game lost from last weekend's snow storm.

NOTES: Roland's hit extended his streak of reaching base safely to 30-straight games, dating back to 2012... Barnette's previous career high in strikeouts was seven against Rhode Island on March 27 of last season... Barnette has 13 strikeouts in 11.2 innings pitched this season...
