|Hailey earns fourth A-10 Player of the Week honor|
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Charlotte senior forward Jennifer Hailey's trophy case continues to get full, as she has added her third-straight Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honor and fourth overall this season for the week of Feb. 11, as announced by the league office Monday. Her four A-10 Player of the Week nods tie her with Danielle Burgin for the most in school history.
Hailey picked her fourth honor after averaging 10.5 and 14.0 rebounds this past week, in leading the Niners to a pair of conference victories and raising their record to 18-4 overall and 7-1 in the league.
The Marshville, N.C., native opened the week with a 10-point, 14-rebound effort against Temple Wednesday as Charlotte picked up a 66-43 win. She hit 4-of-5 free throws and added three blocked shots against the Owls.
She then contributed 11 points and 14 rebounds in Sunday's triumph at Saint Joseph's, knocking the Hawks from the ranks of the conference unbeatens. She tallied the 49ers' first eight points of the contest and 12 of her 14 boards came on the defensive glass. She also added two blocked shots to move into a tie for first place on the school's all-time list with 207 rejections.
Hailey's two double-doubles give her eight straight, all in Atlantic 10 action, and 17 this season, the most in the league. She has 37 double-doubles in her career, placing fourth in program history.
In addition, she also ranks 12th in program history with 1,297 points, surpassing current assistant coach Sabrina Gregory after her performance Sunday.
On the season, Hailey averages 15.5 points and 12.0 rebounds, setting the pace in both categories. Having already hit the 1,000-point plateau this year, she will soon join the 1,000-rebound club. She needs only 12 more caroms to hit the milestone and become the fourth women's player and eighth overall basketball player in school history to accomplish the feat.
Hailey becomes the 14th player to win at least four career Player of the Week honors by the conference since Charlotte joined the league in 2005-06. She is one of 10 to collect at least four in a single season and only of that elite group, she becomes just the second to win four outright, with no shares, in a single campaign, joining Temple's Shey Peddy in 2011-12.
Hailey's three-straight honors put her in a small class of four to win at least that many in a row, along with Dayton's Cara Wright in 2005-06, Temple's Kamesha Hairston in 2006-07 and La Salle's Carlene Hightower in 2007-08. Wright is the lone member of the quartet to extend her streak to four-straight weeks.
The 49ers, who were named the National Team of the Week by ESPN.com's Graham Hays, return to action with a pair of home games this week, starting with a 7 p.m. Wednesday tip inside Halton Arena against A-10 newcomer Butler. It will mark the first meeting ever between the two schools. Charlotte also welcomes George Washington to town for a 2 p.m. Sunday contest.
