|Road swing comes to a close Wednesday night|
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte women's basketball team closes a two-game road trip and plays in its third away contest in the last four outings when it travels to St. Bonaventure, N.Y., for a 7 p.m. Wednesday meeting with the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure.
The 49ers remained a perfect 6-0 in true away games this season by picking up a 71-54 triumph at Saint Louis Sunday afternoon. The victory also improved the team's overall record to 14-4 and Atlantic 10 mark to 3-1.
Senior Jennifer Hailey led the way with a double-double, and near triple-double, of 23 points, 14 rebounds and a career-best seven blocked shots. She was selected as the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for her efforts, her second honor this season and of her career.
Hailey was one of four starters to reach double-figure scoring with junior Ny Hammonds (12 points), sophomore Hillary Sigmon (11) and senior Amanda Dowe (10) joining her. Hammonds also handed out seven assists, equaling her season average, and maintaining her spot among the Top 10 national leaders.
Hailey averages team highs of 15.5 points and 11.4 rebounds, ranking fourth and first in the conference, respectively. Her numbers jump to Atlantic 10-leading averages of 19.3 points and 13.3 rebounds in league games only.
Defensively, Charlotte held its seventh-straight opponent under 60 points with Sunday's victory. It has surrendered just 49.1 points per game during the stretch, which includes all four league outings.
St. Bonaventure, a program that reached the Sweet 16 a year ago, enters Wednesday's contest with a 9-11 overall and 2-3 A-10 ledger. The Bonnies are coached by 13th-year mentor Jim Crowley.
Doris Ortega paces the squad with 11.9 points per game, while CeCe Dixon is next with a 9.6 scoring average, although she has not played in the last two games.
Alaina Walker grabs a team-high 6.1 rebounds per contest, edging out the 5.9 mark by Ortega.
The series has been tightly contested through the years and it stands at an even 4-4 following the Bonnies' 68-63 triumph last January in Charlotte. In fact, during the eight-game series, the scoring difference between the two clubs is 0.0, with both teams averaging 66.0 points per game.
