A-10 coaches selected Charlotte as their preseason favorite to win a seventh title in late April
The Charlotte 49ers golf program tops the Atlantic 10 Conference predicted order of finish, as selected by the league's coaches, the A-10 office announced today. The 49ers, who have won six of the seven conference titles since joining the league in 2006, finished tied for second at last season's rain-shortened A-10 Championship in Florida. The 49ers earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Regionals, the eighth-straight time the Niners competed in the postseason. Charlotte got eight first place votes of the 12 cast in the expanded league for the 2013 season. New A-10 program VCU got two first-place votes, with Richmond and George Washington, last year's tournament champs, each got one first-place vote. The 49ers played five fall tournaments, garnering a fourth and a pair of third-place finishes in good tournament fields all over the country. Juniors Joe Toland (White River Junction, Vt. / Hartford) and Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga. / Alpharetta HS / LSU) have been leading the charge so far for the 49ers, both playing in all 15 rounds for Charlotte to this point. Castro, the last A-10 Golfer of the Week of the fall semester, has one top-five finish and another top-ten finish in a tournament this season, with Toland collecting a top-ten and two more top-20 finishes in the fall. Charlotte's spring season will commence at the Bayou City Collegiate Championships, at Redstone Golf Club in Humble, Tex. February 23-25. The Atlantic 10 Championships will be held at the Huron Bay Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla. from April 26-28.
