CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A return to the friendly confines of the
Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex is next on the slate for the women's tennis team,
as it plays host to the Charlotte 49er Invitational Friday and Saturday. Three
other programs will be making the trek to Charlotte for the two-day event,
including Coastal Carolina, East Carolina and UNC Greensboro.
"We're excited to bring these teams to our brand new facility," head coach
Michaela Gorman said. "It will be a flighted format, so there will be flight
winners at the end of the weekend. It looks like it will be beautiful weather
so we're excited."
The tournament, the Niners' third of four this fall, will begin with doubles
play around 1 p.m. Friday. Following two back-to-back rounds of doubles, a
single round of singles will take place on the courts.
Saturday's action is slated for a 9 a.m. beginning with one singles and doubles
round each before lunch. A lone singles round will conclude tournament play
following the lunch break.
Three 49ers share the team lead in singles wins with five apiece, including
Anna Ekelund, Iveta Guneva and Jessica Pérez. The trio anchors the
full squad's 28-33 singles ledger entering the weekend.
In doubles, the pairing of Ekelund and Lisa Grosselius has tallied the most
victories with four. Natsuko Takayanagi and Alexandra Zinn rode a 3-1 mark last
weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C., to a runner-up finish in their flight at the
Wake Forest Invitational.
Complete information from both days will be available on Charlotte49ers.com. It
marks the first time since 2007 in which Charlotte has played host to a fall
tournament but the inaugural fall event at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
