Charlotte golf moved up one spot to finish fourth of 12 teams at the Rees Jones Collegiate Invite at Haig Point Club in Daufuskie Island, S.C. The 49ers played to a 16-over 304 in round three, finishing at +42 (306-296-304  906) for the tournament. The Niners were three shots better than Winthrop and four shots ahead of UNC Wilmington.

No. 40 Liberty took the team title at six-over, with medalist Niklas Lidstrom winning at three-under par. Three of the four players tied for second at three-over par were Liberty golfers.

Charlotte junior Joe Toland (White River Junction, Vt. / Hartford) was the most consistent golfer for the Niners, leading the squad with a 12-over 228 (77-76-75), finishing in a five-way tie for 18th place. It was Toland's second Top-20 finish of the season.

"The golf course became very difficult today when the wind got blowing like it did, making every hole a challenge," said head coach Ryan Cabbage. "Some of our guys did some good things early and others battled through some stretches where they weren't playing particularly well, but got some birdies late in the round. But we had to count an 80 today and the team is going to struggle when have to count an eight-over par. It's an area we have to get better in order for us to get to where we want to be. We will get back to work and get ready to go to Duke and see if we can play better over there."

Three other Charlotte golfers finished in five-way tie for 23rd, one shot back of the group Toland was in. Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga.), Dan Hendry (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) and Daniel Brantley (Asheboro, N.C.) all finished at 13-over for the tournament. Sophomore Raoul Menard (Ange-Gardier, Quebec City, Canada) was just two shots back of that group, at 15-over.

Charlotte's second-round 296 was the third-best round of the season for the team. Brantley tied for the second-most pars in the tournament, with 37. Toland was in the next group back, with 35.

The 49ers will play in two weekends in Durham, at the Rod Meyers Invitational at the Duke University Golf Club.
