|Volleyball Loses Late Road Fight to Fordham|
Charlotte volleyball took its first set of Atlantic 10 Conference play, but lost 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 23-25, 25-20) at Fordham Friday night. The 49ers are now 8-7 on the year, off to an 0-3 start in conference play. The Rams are 10-12, 2-1 in the A-10.
The 49ers took leads of 1-0 and 4-3 in the opening set, but Fordham was too strong on the home court, and with a lead of 6-5 did not relinquish their lead the rest of the set.
Charlotte led in the second swet as late as 14-12, but again the Rams took control and put away the 49ers to lead two sets to none into the intermission.
Charlotte was down 4-1 in the third, but rallied back to a 7-6 lead. The 49ers lost the lead twice and were down by as large as a 17-13 deficit, but came back to tie the set at 19. The Rams were able to take a 23-22 lead, but a bad set and two attack errors undermined the Fordham charge to give Charlotte its first set of the night.
The fourth set saw the score tied at the four points five through eight before the Rams went on a 7-1 run to take a 15-9 lead and cruise to the match victory.
Freshman outside hitter Carly Ochs (Town and Country, Mo. / St. Joseph's Academy) led Charlotte with 11 kills. It was her second consecutive match leading Charlotte in kills. Junior Middle hitter Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) added nine kills for the 49ers. The defense was led by senior Jenna Litoborski (Lemont, Ill.), who tied the match-high total of 15 digs.
The 49ers will finish the conference road swing with a Sunday match at Rhode Island, with first service at 1 p.m.
