|49ers Blank Gardner-Webb, 2-0, In Exhibition Game|
Charlotte, NC- Behind two goals by Giuseppe Gentile and all around strong team performance, the eighth-ranked Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team blanked Gardner-Webb, 2-0, in an exhibition game on rain soaked Transamerica Field.
"We have been working really hard on our defensive shape," Charlotte coach Kevin Langan said. "We limited them to very few chances and kept it tight in the back. Overall, I was happy with our performance."
Gentile scored the game's first goal when he stole the ball from a Gardner-Webb defender near the top of the box. He then sent a shot past Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Scott Krotee into the back of the net in the 44th minute.
About halfway through the first half, the 49ers had two other great scoring chances but shots by Tyler Gibson and Gentile were stopped by Gardner-Webb's Krotee.
Early in the second half, the 49ers had several great scoring chances but several shots by Dominic Bonilla and Kyle Parker were either stopped by Gardner-Webb's Krotee, went wide or hit the cross bar.
Charlotte scored their other goal when Donnie Smith passed the ball from 25 yards out from the right side of the field to Gentile who was right of the post. Gentile then headed the ball into the back of the net from about 10 yards out in the 74th minute.
