Charlotte 49ers head coach Alan Major has announced that 6-6 forward JT Thompson has transferred from Virginia Tech to UNC Charlotte and is currently enrolled in summer classes.
Thompson (Monroe, N.C./Hope Christian Academy) played three seasons with the Hokies but has missed the last two following ACL surgeries. He would have one year of eligibility remaining.
He played in 92 games from his freshman year of 2007-08 to his junior year of 2009-10, averaging 6.5 points and 4.2 rebounds while shooting 51% from the field. He averaged 7.3 points and 4.6 rebounds in 34 games played during his junior season. He sat out 2010-11 following surgery to his left knee and missed the 2011-12 season following surgery on his right knee.
"We are excited to have JT join our team," said Major, who noted Thompson is working to complete requirements for grad school. "He has experience, leadership skills and toughness and has competed at a high level."
Charlotte already has a class of five newcomers for the 2012-13 season, including fall signees Willie Clayton, Darion Clark and Shawn Lester and spring signees Denzel Ingram and Ivan Benkovic. Clayton, a 6-7 forward from Thomasville, Ga., was named MVP of Georgia's North-South All-Star game for the second straight year. Clark, a 6-8 power forward from Conyers, Ga., helped key Oak Hill Academy's perfect 44-0 season that included a #1 ranking in the final national polls. Lester, a 6-3 guard from Mooresville, N.C. and Ingram a 5-11 point guard from Chapel Hill, N.C. both scored 1500 points in their careers and were chosen to participate in the Carolina All-Star Basketball Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C. and the Jordan Brand Regional All-Star Classic in Charlotte's Time Warner Cable Arena. Benkovic, a 6-5 shooting guard, played one season at nationally-ranked United Faith Christian Academy.
