Eugene, Oregon -- Former 49ers standout Cassie (Ficken) Slade placed 8th in the 10,000 meter run at the 2011 USA Track and Field Championships, Thursday night, to kickstart performances by several current and former 49ers track athletes. Slade is one of three 49ers competing for the USA Track and Field Championship while four others are competing in the USATF Junior Championships.
Slade, affiliated with Boulder Running Company/adidas, ran a time of 32:55.98.
In other action on the opening day, former all-America sprinter Shareese Woods ran a time of 55.90 in the women's 400 meter prelims but failed to qualify for the finals. Freshman Daniel Freeman participated in the men's junior javelin and placed 18th with a throw of 52.51 meters.
On Friday, the 49ers have three athletes performing. Freshman Briauna Jones, the 2011 Atlantic 10 Women's Track and Field Most Outstanding Rookie, will compete in the women's junior long jump, freshman Sean Kluttz will run in the men's junior 800 meters prelims and freshman Joseph Cotto will run in the men's junior 10,000 meters. Keara Thomas, who qualified for the NCAA Championships in the same event, will compete in the women's 3000 Steeplechase semifinals.
On Saturday, Jones is back in action in the junior triple jump. The men's junior 800 meter final will be held Saturday while the women's 3000 steeplechase final will be on Sunday.
