Charlotte freshman starting pitcher Tyler Barnette (Hickory, N.C. / Hickory HS) was named to the Louisville Slugger / Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American Team, announced this week. He is the 15th player in team history named to the list.

Barnette, the Atlantic 10 Conference's Rookie of the Year, was second on the 49ers squad with nine victories (9-2) and ended his season with a 2.29 earned run average after 90.1 innings. He finished third on the team with 56 strikeouts in his first collegiate season. He tossed one complete game in his inaugural campaign and was part of two of Charlotte's 11 shutouts in 2011, a top-five total in college baseball this season.

Only twice this season did Barnette give up more hits then innings pitched, finishing with 18 fewer hits (72) than innings this season. He allowed the second-lowest slugging percentage against (.292) on the team and the third-lowest batting average against (.224) in 2011. He had the fewest wild pitches and balks among Charlotte's regular four starters.

The 49ers ended the year 43-16, tying for the second-most wins in a season in school history and exactly matching the 2008 overall team record. Charlotte won a pair of games versus ranked opponents, with the final win of the season coming in the Tempe, Ariz. Regional over No. 19 Arkansas.

The 49ers won more than 70 percent of their games for the third time in the past five seasons, and own a 207-83 record since the 2007 season (.714). Charlotte has won four Atlantic 10 Conference titles in the previous five seasons, making three NCAA Tournaments in that time.
