|Charlotte Falls to No. 10 Arizona State in Regional Semifinal, 16-1|
Charlotte suffered its biggest loss on the biggest stage of the season, losing 16-1 at Arizona State in the semifinals of the Tempe, Ariz. Regional Saturday night, with the game ending just after 1 a.m. Eastern.
Redshirt junior catcher Ross Steedley (Granite Quarry, N.C. / East Rowan HS) had the first hit for Charlotte, a double down the left field line, but was thrown out on a failed sacrifice bunt attempt that took the win out of the sails of the 49ers in the third after Justin Wilson (Canton, N.C. / Pisgah HS) was left out at third in the second after a walk, a stolen base and an error with one out. Charlotte left nine men on base in the game.
ASU starter Kramer Champlin was magnificent, striking out nine and holding Charlotte to just one hit in seven innings for his ninth win of the season (9-3). He walked five.
Charlotte freshman Tyler Barnette (Hickory, N.C. / Hickory HS) was uncharacteristically not in command of the strike zone, walking two and allowing five hits in three innings, the shortest outing of his career. He took only his second loss of the season (9-2).
The 49ers fall to the one-loss bracket final, for a rematch with Arkansas Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. Eastern. The 49ers sent the Razorbacks to that bracket by virtue of a 3-2 win Friday afternoon. That loser is eliminated, while the winner stays to face Arizona State at 9 p.m. Eastern, needing a win to stay alive to a winner-take-all final on Monday. If ASU wins that contest, the Sun Devils advance to the Super Regionals next week against the winner of the Austin, Tex. Regional.
Redshirt junior RH Joe Yermal will start for Charlotte Sunday, opposite Arkansas freshman RH Ryne Stanek to stay alive in the Regional.
