The 49ers are one of 16-teams that will play in tournament which begins, November 12. Charlotte is guaranteed to play at least three games in the tournament which runs from November 12-21.
Charlotte, who reached the second round of last season's postseason WNIT, will be playing in the preseason WNIT for the second time in school history. Charlotte played Georgia Tech in the 2002 Preseason WNIT.
Joining the 49ers in the preseason WNIT are Austin Peay (Ohio Valley), Central Florida (Conference USA), DePaul (Big East), Florida (SEC), Hampton (MEAC), Iona (Metro Atlantic), James Madison (Colonial), Lamar (Southland), Missouri State (Missouri Valley), Purdue (Big Ten), South Dakota State (Summit), St. Francis (Northeast), Toledo (MAC), Utah Valley (Great West) and Valparaiso (Horizon).
The 49ers return seven letterwinners and two starters off last season's team which won 18 games and reached the A-10 Tournament semifinals as well as the second round of the WNIT. Shannon McCallum, a second-team All-Atlantic 10 selection in 2010, returns to the 49ers lineup after leading the team in scoring, rebounding, steals and blocked shots last season. Joining McCallum as returning letterwinners are Kendria Holmes, Amanda Dowe, Jai Forney, Katie Meador, Jessica Johnson and Jennifer Hailey. Junior guard Ephiphany Woodson is eligible this season after sitting out last season after transferring from the University of Miami.
Joining those eight returning players on the 49ers roster are talented newcomers Tiona Burley, Markeisha Gatling, Ny Hammonds, Paige McCallum, Mimi Mungedi, Gabby Tyler and Lanie Whitaker.
The 49ers face an Iona team that also reached last season's postseason WNIT. Iona finished the 2009-10 season with an identical 18-14 record as the 49ers. This game will mark the second ever meeting between Charlotte and Iona. The 49ers won the only other meeting, 80-74, at the Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville, Virginia, December 7, 1984.
