Six 49ers Named CSM Preseason All-C-USA

Charlotte, N.C. – Six members of the Charlotte 49ers nationally-ranked men’s soccer team were named College Sports Madness Preseason All-Conference USA. Midfielder Tyler Gibson, defender Thomas Allen, goalkeeper Klay Davis and forward Giuseppe Gentile were named first-team preseason All-Conference USA by College Sports Madness. Defender Biko Bradnock-Brennan was named second-team preseason All-Conference USA. Head Coach Kevin Langan was College Sports Madness preseason pick as Conference USA Coach of the Year.

The 49ers are ranked 14th in the College Sports Madness preseason poll. The 49ers were also picked by College Sports Madness to capture the Conference USA title.

A couple of weeks ago, Allen, Gentile and Gibson were voted preseason All-Conference USA in a vote by the league’s 10 head coaches.

In 2012, Gibson and Gentile were named first-team NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic region. Allen and Davis earned second-team NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic region honors.

Last season, Allen and Davis both earned first-team All-Atlantic 10 honors for the first time in their careers. Allen and Davis anchored a 49ers defense recorded nine shutouts and limited 18 foes to a goal or less last year. The 49ers defense only allowed six goals in Atlantic 10 play.

Allen, who earned National Team of the Week honors last year, scored two goals including the game-winning goal in the 49ers 1-0 win over #14 Coastal Carolina this season. He has also recorded an assist.

Davis was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com’s National Team of the Week after helping the 49ers post road shutouts against Saint Louis and Butler. Last season, Davis had a 0.79 goals against average with 49 saves and 8.5 shutouts.

Gibson is a three-time first-team All-Atlantic 10 selection. Last season, Gibson scored three goals and dished out six assists. He scored game-winning goals in the 49ers 3-0 win over Stony Brook and a 1-0 win over Duquesne last year.

Gentile, who earned second-team All-Atlantic 10 honors last year for the second straight season, finished second on the team with nine goals. He led the team with seven assists. Gentile scored game-winning goals against Kentucky, George Washington and in the NCAA Tournament win over UAB. Last season, he scored three goals and recorded two assists in the 49ers victories over Massachusetts and Rhode Island. For his performance in those two games, he was named TopDrawerSoccer.com’s National Player of the Week as well as Atlantic 10 Player of the Week.

Bradnock-Brennan, who earned Atlantic 10 All-Rookie teams honors last year, played an integral role on a 49ers defense which has recorded nine shutouts and limited 18 foes to a goal or less.

Last season, Langan guided the 49ers to 15 wins, which is the most wins by a coach in their first season at Charlotte, an Atlantic 10 regular-season title and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Charlotte begins the 2013 in an exhibition game on the road at Winthrop, Tuesday, August 20. Then, Charlotte faces Davidson at Transamerica Field in their final exhibition game, Saturday, August 24. The 49ers begin the regular-season on the road at Denver, Friday August 30.
