BIRMINGHAM, AL – Luke Waechter scored his first career goal but the 21st-ranked Charlotte 49ers (2-2-1) lost to Memphis (4-1-1), 2-1, in the UAB Soccer For A Cure Classic. Senior defender Thomas Allen and senior midfielder Aidan Kirkbride were named to the UAB "Soccer For A Curer" Classic All-Tournament team.

“We did not look ourselves today,” Charlotte coach Kevin Langan said. “Our guys looked tired today which probably is a result of Friday’s game which took a lot out of us. We did not play with our usual intensity. We had several golden chances to increase our lead. In the final 10 minutes of the game, we got even leggier and Memphis started moving the ball well. This was a tough one, we did enough to win the game with the chances we created but if you don’t finish those chances you don’t deserve to win the game. I was disappointed with our performance. We need to dust ourselves off and get ready for next Saturday’s home game against Campbell. It will be nice to play our next four games at home in front of Niner Nation and the Queen City Army.”

Waechter scored his first career goal when he put a through ball from Robby Thomas into the back of the net at the 44:15 mark.

Memphis tied the score when Kenneth Kauker scored off assists by Raul Gonzalez and Liam Collins at the 80:11 mark.

Memphis Shane Keely scored the game-winning goal off a Liam Collins assist at the 86:46 mark.

The 49ers finished the game with six shots. After Waechter’s goal, Conor Agnew took the 49ers next two shots but his shot with four seconds left in the first half was stopped by Memphis goalkeeper Cody Uzcategui. Then, Agnew’s next shot was in the 58th minute but that shot went wide.

Shots by Kyle Parker, Giuseppe Gentile and Aidan Kirkbride were either wide or saved by Memphis’ Uzcategui over the final 25 minutes of the game.

Charlotte returns to Transamerica Field where the 49ers begin a four-game home stand against Campbell, Saturday, September 21 at 7 pm.
