Charlotte golf stumbled in day two, shooting a nine-over 289 to drop to fifth overall of a ten-team field at five-over (276-289 – 565) at the Topy Cup, contested at the Tanagura Country Club in Tanagura, Japan. The International competition sees Washington on top of the leaderboard at 16-under par with one round remaining.
Charlotte senior Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga. / LSU) dropped one shot behind the leader, Sam Love of UAB, with a second-round two-under 68. He is tied for second, two strokes back of Love, which sits at eight-under par. Castro logged a par on his entire front nine, with three birdies and a bogey on the back nine for his two-under round.
"Franco had another good, solid round today,” said Charlotte head coach Ryan Cabbage. He is in great form and I look for him to have a fantastic final round."
Freshman Seth Gandy (Huntersville, N.C. / Hough HS) has Charlotte’s second-best round of the day, a second-straight two-over 72. He was two over on the front, with a bogey and a birdie on the back for a back-nine par. He is one shot behind sophomore teammate Thomas Rowland (Consett, England / St. Bedes Catholic School and Sixth Form College), who shot a four-over 74. Rowland is at three-over for the tournament, tied for 23rd, while Gandy is ties for 25th.
"I mentioned earlier the importance of putting the ball in play off the tee on this golf course which allows you be more aggressive with approach shots. As a whole, we did not do as good a job of that in round two as we did in the first round on Tuesday and therefore we struggled a bit."
Sophomores Dan Hendry (Dubai, United Arab Emirates / Dubai College) and Daniel Brantley (Asheboro, N.C.) both sit in a tie for 32rd, at six-over par. Hendry shot a five-over 75 Wednesday, with Brantley coming in with a 76.
The 49ers will be paired with Japanese Universities Ritsumeikan and Nagasaki International, along with the five individual Japanese golfers for the final round, which begins tonight at 6 p.m. Eastern, 7 a.m. locally.
"Our guys will be ready to go for the final round and I expect us to play really well in Thursday"
