Despite a team-leading 14 kills from freshman Claire Kreuz (Boerne, Tex. / Samuel Champion HS), Charlotte volleyball fell in three sets (25-23, 25-23, 27-25) to UT-Martin Friday to start day two of the Comfort Inns and Suites by Carlson Invitational at UT-Chattanooga. The 49ers lost by the minimum margin (six total points) in the three sets, with the deciding set going extra points.
The 49ers (1-3) have played nine of the season’s 15 sets to within four points or less, winning just three such tight sets this season. Charlotte has averaged one set per match going past the 25-point winning score, with a two-point minimum needed to secure a set.
Despite the 3-0 score, the stats for the match were nearly dead even, with Charlotte winning in attack percentage in the second set, but the two teams were separated by just seven points, with the Skyhawks outhitting Charlotte .218 to .211 in the contest. Only seven kills, three service aces, three digs and one block separated the two teams in the contest.
There were 24 ties and 13 lead changes in the tight match.
Sophomore setter Britney Leigh Held (Brookfield, Wis. / Brookfield Central HS) had her team-leading second double-double of the season, with 39 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore Michelle Hovey (Raleigh, N.C. / Lighthouse) paced Charlotte with 14 digs. Senior Taylor Cannon (Elizabeth, N.C. / Camtech HS) had 10 kills, her second double-digit kills match of the season and one off her career high. Kreuz leads Charlotte with 57 total kills and a 3.80 kills-per-set average.
The 49ers will take on the host Mocs tonight at 7 p.m.
