The Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer team, who has reached at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament for two straight years, are ranked 21st in the preseason NSCAA/Continental Tire Coaches Poll. The 49ers are also ranked 24th in the preseason College Soccer News Poll.
The 49ers began practicing for the 2013 season on the morning of Monday, August 12.
Charlotte returns seven starters and 15 winners from last season’s Atlantic 10 Regular-Season Champion and NCAA Tournament participant squad. The 49ers were 15-4-3 and 7-1-1 in the Atlantic 10.
Kevin Langan, who is entering his second season as head coach, returns several key players including All-Atlantic 10 and All-Mid-Atlantic region selections Tyler Gibson, Klay Davis, Thomas Allen and Giuseppe Gentile. Allen, Gibson and Gentile were also named to the preseason All-Conference USA team.
Charlotte also return stalwarts Nick Barnhorst, Dominic Bonilla, Biko Bradnock-Brennan, Aidan Kirkbride, David Mayer, Will Mayhew, Kyle Parker, Anthony Perez and Robby Thomas.
In non-conference play, the 49ers play 13th-ranked Coastal Carolina on the road, September 6. The 49ers play 17th-ranked Wake Forest at Transamerica Field, October 1.
The 49ers, who have returned to Conference USA, will face league foes 11th-ranked New Mexico, October 4, and 14th-ranked Tulsa, October 13, on the road. Charlotte plays Old Dominion, who received votes in the poll, at Transamerica Field, Wednesday, October 9. Charlotte plays Conference USA foe Kentucky, who received votes in the poll, at Transamerica Field, Saturday, October 19 at 7 pm.
Charlotte begins the 2013 season with a exhibition game on the road at Winthrop, August 20. Then, Charlotte plays Davidson at Transamerica Field in their final exhibition game, August 24. The 49ers begin the regular-season on the road at Denver, August 30.
