49ers hit four homers in sweep of St. Bonaventure

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte softball team secured a pair of crucial Atlantic 10 wins after sweeping St. Bonaventure in a doubleheader at McGraw-Jennings Field, Sunday afternoon.

Charlotte (20-22 overall, 6-8 A-10) won game one 2-0 and game two 9-6. The Bonnies (6-34) fell to 2-14 in the conference.

In the opening game, Charlotte took a 1-0 lead in the second inning with Samantha Slade’s leadoff home run over the left field fence. Slade’s homer was her second of the season.

In the fourth inning, the 49ers were able to extend their lead to 2-0 over the Bonnies. With two outs and Slade on first, Jessica Plemmons singled to right field. Kalie Lang hit a RBI-single to left field to drive in Slade but Plemmons was out at second on the play to end the inning.

Pitcher Katie Watkins was able to keep St. Bonaventure scoreless and allowed just five hits. Watkins tossed a complete game, finishing with a game-high seven strikeouts.

Natalie Capone finished with a game-leading three hits.

In game two, the Niners were trailing 2-1 until the third inning when Briana Gwaltney crushed a three-run homer, her seventh of the season to lift Charlotte to a 4-2 lead.

Charlotte added a run in the fourth inning with a solo home run from Lang, her sixth of the season to extend its leads to 5-2.

But St. Bonaventure also got its hands on the long ball and tied the game 5-5 with a three-run homer from Ashely Snider in the bottom of the fourth.

The 49ers regained the lead in the sixth when it put together four runs off five hits and a St. Bonaventure error to push the score to 9-5.

In the seventh inning, Katie Sinclair led-off with a solo home run to slice Charlotte’s lead to 9-6 but it wasn’t enough as the Niners closed out the game.

Watkins improved to 12-13 after relieving Lisikatos in the fourth inning. Watkins allowed only one run as the duo each finished with a pair of strikeouts.

The 49ers finished with 12 hits and were led by Capone, Slade, Lang, and Lisikatos who all recorded two hits.

Chelsea Ingersoll who leads the 49ers in home runs, hit her ninth of the season, a solo shot over the centerfield fence in the second inning.

Capone tallied five hits in the doubleheader and recorded her 16th multiple-hit game of the year.

Charlotte will visit South Carolina in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 24 beginning at 4 p.m.
