|Holloman helps 49ers defeat Rhode Island 4-3|
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte softball team battled back and forth with Rhode Island and came out on top, 4-3 in an Atlantic 10 game at the D.L. Phillips Complex on Friday.
“Our performance today was a step in the right direction for us,” Head coach Aimee DeVos said. “It’s not where we want to be completely but Lindsey obviously came through for us today. We constantly talk about scoring runners when they’re in position and she did that very well for us. To win at home and in a conference game is exactly what we want.”
After the Rams posted a 1-0 lead in the first inning Charlotte tallied three hits to take the 2-1 advantage. Natalie Capone and Alex Rogers led-off the inning with consecutive singles. With one out, Chelsea Ingersoll loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Samantha Slade drove in Charlotte’s first run with an infield single. The Niners kept their scoring drive going when Lindsey Holloman reached on a fielder’s choice to score Rogers.
The Rams evened the score with a solo home run from Megan Congro in the second inning. The 49ers regained the lead, 3-2 in the third inning when Lindsey Holloman crushed a stand-up double to centerfield on the first pitch to drive in Ingersoll.
Rhode Island responded and tied the game again 3-3 in the fourth inning but the 49ers reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning. With one out and Slade on second, it was Holloman who crushed another double, this time to right field to give the 49ers the 4-3 lead.
The Rams threatened in the top of the seventh when what looked like a leadoff hit by Courtney Pendergast but left fielder Briana Gwaltney made a perfect throw to get Pendergast out at second.
Holloman was 2-for-3 with a game-high three RBIs. Jessica Plemmons led the team in hits with three and Capone finished with two.
Katie Watkins (9-12) recorded six strikeouts in the win and allowed five hits.
The 49ers continue A-10 play with a single game against Rhode Island on Saturday, April 13 and a doubleheader against Massachusetts on Sunday, April 14 beginning at noon.
