CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
The Charlotte women’s tennis team battled through a number of close matches but was unable to rally from an early deficit, dropping a 5-2 Senior Day setback to Furman Thursday afternoon at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. The Paladins clinched the doubles point and then won four times in singles play, despite a 20-minute delay due to a quick rain shower, to lock up the win in the 49ers’ final home match of the campaign.
Charlotte (9-6) forced an extra game to be played in the No. 1 doubles contest, as Anna Ekelund
and Lisa Grosselius
pushed Lauren Kline and Alex Moreno-Kaste to a 9-7 battle.
The Niners looked to recover in singles action but Furman (12-8) won at the No. 2 through 5 slots to seal the triumph.
Charlotte gained a 6-2, 6-3 triumph from Alexandra Zinn
at the No. 1 position against Kline for its lone straight-set decision.
The other 49ers victory was a three-set verdict, as Iveta Guneva
came-from-behind to defeat Jenny Porter 1-6, 7-6 (2), 10-8 in the No. 6 meeting. Tyler Baker
was able to force a third set in her No. 4 matchup with Amanda Murray but unfortunately was unable to pull out the win.
The Niners will close the regular season with a 3 p.m. Friday contest at Davidson in Davidson, N.C. Furman 5, Charlotte 2 Singles
